The future of Indian fashion unveiled
Think fashion and first institute that comes to the mind is National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The Delhi-based institute showcased its enormous talent pool over two days (May 26- 27, 09) as students showcased their skills to the world. This fashion extravaganza called The Dialouge'09 brought about a new wave of fashion. Presenting their skills were NIFT's graduating batch from the fields of design, management and technology.
The Siri Fort auditorium was abuzz with the happenings. The event began with launch of a book titled Non Compos Mentis, a compilation of papers of the graduating students. This first-time initiative is the work of the Department of Fashion Communication, NIFT. The launch was held along with the exhibition of works by the class of 2009.
Tantu '09 was the next event which showed the works of the Department of Textile design. As Mrs Savita S Rana, Associate Professor, NIFT said all the students had gone through rigorous training and apprenticeship with renowned brands like Vardhaman, OCM, Satya Paul, Fab India to name a few, before letting their work culminate in to the final product. A wide range of home products moulded with creative excellence formed a part of this event.
Maglieria '09, displayed work by the Department of Knitwear Design. With an audio visual presentation and a fashion show, the knit products have been created either during the internship or as a part of an autonomous project. A number of industries have sponsored these collections, including Monte Carlo, Reebok India, Kazo to name a few.
Spectacle '09 was put by the Department of Leather Design. The relentless work of the students was totally evident in this funky, hip, yet useful and aesthetic fashion show.
The next day began with two seminars, Space '79 and Bottom Line '09.
Showcase '09, an exhibition by the Department of Fashion and Lifestyle accessories, was on display for the whole day.
As one walked around seeing the interesting coffee mugs, lamps shades and magazine holders, one did wonder if these products were indeed works of students, such was their quality and aesthetics. The grand finale of this absolutely stimulating two-day event was marked by Fashionova. A three-hour fashion show was presented by the Department of Fashion Design showcasing the collections of the graduation batch.
The auditorium was jam-packed and what a show it was! The desire, enthusiasm and talent of 43 graduating students had to be seen to be believed. As the models strutted the ramp in the clothes, accessories and foot wears designed by the students, one was absolutely floored. Post their internships, these students will have the backing of important fashion houses in the country. And this was to be expected of them. After all NIFT has the reputation of having churned out big guns like JJ Valaya and Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
The designs on display were relevant, bold, rebellious, innovative, chic and quaint and awe inspiring. A great start certainly. Dialouge '09 did what it set out to do'draw people's attention to a brand new group of designers and their potential.
